The oldest son of Maria Feodorovna (Princess Dagmar of Denmark) and the future Tsar Alexander III was Tsarevich Nicholas. He was born in May, 1868, before his father became Tsar, and succeeded his father as Tsar Nicholas II upon his father's death in November, 1894.
The above portrait of young Nicholas was done by the Danish artist Laurits Tuxen, who also painted the famous Fredensborg family portrait of Christian IX and his descendants.
