In 1981, the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad canonized Nicholas II,
Alexandra, and their children as martyrs. In 2000, the Russian Orthodox Church inside Russia (Moscow Patriarchate) canonized
them as "passion bearers", meaning they bore their suffering in imitation of Christ.
